Shopping streets are nearby places where you can go to buy things, serving to bring people and the community together. Naka Ward is filled with many attractive shopping streets, both new and old.
This month, we introduce you to some thriving shopping streets that, despite the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic, are using their knowledge and ingenuity to carry on serving people with a smile. So why not take a stroll around town (maintaining social distance, of course!) and try to find some new favorite stores?
Isezakicho 7-chome Shoeikai (이세자키쵸 7초메 상영회)
Cherishing history while branching out into new endeavors to create a shopping street that feels like home
From left, in clockwise order: Mr. Urushibara, Mr. Okawa, Mr. Fujimoto, and Mr. Motoi
Chairman: Takahiro Fujimoto (Yamaya Kicchin)
Secretariat: Toshimasa Okawa
Vice-chairman: Takanobu Urushibara (Minguru Manguru)
Advisor: Tetsuo Motoi (Negishi no Hataya)
Isezakicho 7-chome Shoeikai is lined with numerous distinctive stores, both longstanding stores that have been in business for a century or more and new stores, including restaurants, an aromatherapy salon, a jeweler's workshop, etc. This shopping street has a long history, but has gained a renewed sense of vibrancy through the cooperation of young people who have chosen to set up shop here.
The shopping street and neighborhood associations cooperate in holding a range of fun events intended to deepen local ties, such as temple festivals, barbeques, and rice pounding, in the hope of fostering a greater sense of community spirit among residents.
Outdoor terrace seating will be available from August as a measure against the coronavirus. Please feel free to drop by and say hi!
Noge Inshokugyo Kyodo Kumai (노게음식업 협동조합)
Stores and customers need to work together to overcome this crisis, so take the right precautions and have fun
Chairman: Masanobu Tai (Tonkatsu Pariichi)
People are slowly starting to return on weekends, but there are still only around half as many people as usual. We are taking whatever measures we can to help prevent the spread of infection, such as by reducing the number of seats or by providing hand sanitizer. For customers to enjoy their shopping trip in Noge, we ask them to cooperate with stores in working together to overcome these hard times, such as by wearing masks and visiting stores when there are fewer people around.
Unions, neighborhood associations, shopping streets, the police, and others are also cooperating in running neighborhood watch patrols. The Noge area as a whole is therefore working together to ensure that people can have a good time with peace of mind while maintaining the community’s vibrancy.
Shinyamashita Shoeikai (신야마시타 상영회)
Bringing vitality back to our shopping streets for the sake of the next generation
From left, Mr. Kobayashi and Mr. Akiyama
Chairman: Hiroshi Kobayashi (Komugi ga Umai Piza no Mise PIZZA PAZZA/Yokohama Hambagu no Tora)
Vice-chairman: Satoshi Akiyama (Yokohama Dainamaito)
We launched this shopping street with in the hope of recapturing the area’s glorious days of old.
Shinyamashita Shoeikai is a shopping street than runs from Shinyamashita 1-chome to 3-chome. This expansive area boasts a lineup of some truly prestigious stores, such as a winery, a fishing boat store, authentic Italian restaurants, etc. While all stores have been run on an individual basis, our achievements as a shopping street have served to bring us together.
Many stores have been affected by the coronavirus, but remain open for business while taking the necessary precautions. It is at times like this that we need to put on a united front and do our best.
Honmoku Sankeien Storiito Shoeikai (혼모쿠 산케이엔 스트리트 소에이카이)
Revitalization not only of shopping streets by the community as a whole
From left, Mr. Akiyoshi, Mr. Iwanami, and Mr. Ofuchi
Chairman: Koichi Iwanami (Iwanami Shoten)
Vice-chairman: Norio Akiyoshi (DORONKO)
Accountant: Tsuyoshi Ofuchi (Reriaburu)
We created a new shopping street with our friends as a way to keep our community smiling.
We hope to come up with ways to give people a good time. Nearby Sankeien Garden is an attractive place popular with tourists. In the future, we would like to collaborate with Sankeien Garden to make our shopping street a vibrant place bustling with people.
Many shops have suffered greatly because of the coronavirus, especially restaurants, but are doing the best they can by providing a takeout service, setting up outside terrace seating, or disinfecting their premises from top to bottom.
We hope our shopping street will help enliven the Honmoku area as a whole. And it would be great to make new friends who share the same goals as us, too.
Enjoy the taste of professional cuisine in your own home through takeout and delivery services!
