Using the library

Create a library card

Anyone of any age can create a library if they live in the City of Yokohama, or commute here for work or study. Library cards are universal, meaning they can be used at all Yokohama City Library branches.
*Please bring a valid form of personal identification which contains your name and current address (driver’s license, health insurance card, student ID card, etc.).
*Those who commute to Yokohama for work of study need to submit something confirming the address of their place of work or study.

Reserve books

Each user can borrow up to 6 books. You can be put into the waiting line for books that are out on loan, and can request books from other libraries. In addition to library counters, you can also reserve books via phone or online.
If a certain book is not available at Naka Library, you can request it from any other Yokohama City Library branch, Kanagawa Prefectural Library, or from other local libraries within Kanagawa Prefecture.

Borrowing and returning books

Each user can borrow up to 6 books (total for all Yokohama City Library branches) for 2 weeks.
If nobody else has reserved the book in question, you can extend the period of loan on books one time only. You can also extend books over the phone or online, and can return books to any Yokohama City Library branch. Outside of opening hours, please return books in the “Book Return” slots, located to the side of the front entrance of libraries.

Search and reserve books online anytime, anywhere

You can search the collections of all Yokohama City Library branches by accessing the search page on the Yokohama City Library website.
If you input your library card number, date of birth and telephone number, and register a password, you can also make reservations, and check which books you are borrowing or have reserved.
If you register an email address, you will receive a notification informing you when a book you have reserved is ready for collection.

If in doubt, ask a librarian

I can’t find a certain book I am looking for... There is something I wish to look up...

In such cases, please ask a librarian at the book enquiries counter, who will help you find the book or information you are looking for.

References to help you choose a book

There are so many books I do not know where to begin

Please use Yokohama City Library’s booklist if you are struggling to choose a book.
