It is the time of year when young children prepare to start school. This is a time of mixed emotions for children, who may be feeling both excited and nervous about the prospect of starting school. But rest assured: schools in Naka Ward are friendly places providing kids with plenty of after school clubs and activities.
To all new first graders
Message from a Principal
Mr. Takashige Ishibashi, headteacher of Tateno Elementary School
At elementary school, you can learn many interesting things, from Japanese and math to music and gym, as well as take part in many other exciting events, such as sports days and excursions. Additionally, there are delicious school meals to look forward to. All the older students and teachers are looking forward to welcoming you to school. When you go to school in the morning, members of the local community will also be there to ensure your safety.

In order for children to enjoy each and every day to the fullest, it is also important for households to ensure that their children leave home in the morning with a smile on their face. To do so, please make sure you and your children are aware of the following three key rules for the morning: 1. Eat a proper breakfast; 2. Early to bed, early to rise; and 3. Make sure to go the toilet before heading out to school. The teachers at your child’s school will also lend their support in helping your child get the most out of school life.

School meals at elementary schools in Yokohama are prepared fresh every day in the school kitchen. From the selection of ingredients to food preparation, we pay meticulous care to everything we do, with safety and peace of mind as our top priority.

After school kids clubs and after school children’s club are places where elementary school children can spend time after school.
①After school kids clubs
After school kids clubs, which are held on school grounds, provide a safe and comfortable place for children to go after school, serving as places for children to both play and spend time with other kids from their school.

What kind of place is an after school kids club?
→ An after school kids club is a place where children can enjoy experiences that they would otherwise not be able to have in school classes or at home, as well as interacting with children from different school years.
Message for guardians who are considering making use of an after school kids club
→ After school kids clubs are places where children can spend time in a familiar environment with peace of mind and without leaving the school premises. When they start school, first graders do not have any afternoon classes to begin with, so they can have time to themselves at their after school kids club before the older children arrive, allowing them to get used to their new environment at their own pace.
②After school children’s clubs (After School Care Program (Gakudo-hoiku))
After school children’s clubs are run with the understanding and cooperation of the local community to allow elementary school children whose guardians are not at home during the day due to work or other reasons to spend a safe and productive time after school.

What kind of place is an after school children’s club?
→ Every day, when the children come here from school, we greet them by saying, “Welcome back!” In this way, it is a home a way from home for the children, part of their daily lives.
Message for guardians who are considering making use of an after school children’s club
→ In the case of children whose guardians we see on a daily basis, we can talk to them about how their children are getting on in a timely manner. Please feel free to consult with us if you have any concerns. Staff go to meet first graders at their school or train station or bus stop until they get used to coming by themselves. One great thing about after school children’s clubs is that children can make new friends from outside their school.

Children with disabilities (aged from elementary school first grade to senior high school third grade) can make use of this service after school classes have finished or on days off as a way to help improve their daily life skills and provide leisure time.

This system helps bring together people who wish to leave their children in the care of someone and members of the community who have both registered as people offering to take care of children and met the criteria.

②Submit Feedback on the Second Term Naka Ward Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Action Plan (Proposal)

Naka Ward is a thriving part of the port-town of Yokohama, and many foreign residents live here; in fact, they comprise over 10 percent of the ward’s population. In order to create a ward in which everyone can live a full and safe life regardless of their nationality or roots, in 2017 Naka Ward Office established the Naka Ward Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Action Plan and is working to promote policies for multicultural coexistence.
We have now put together a proposal for the Second Term Naka Ward Multicultural Coexistence Promotion Action Plan, which is intended to operate between 2021 and 2024, and are asking people to submit feedback on it and make suggestions.

From January 25 (Mon.) to February 25 (Thu.), 2021
Places where you can look through the Action Plan Proposal
You can look through the Action Plan Proposal in the following locations: Kusei Suishin-ka (Ward Administration Promotion Division) on the 6th floor (counter 63) of Naka Ward Office, the Civic Information Center on the 3rd floor of Yokohama City Hall, Naka International Lounge, community centers within each ward, Naka Library, and Yokohama City Central Library.
