The Naka Ward Community Social Welfare and Health Plan (nakanaka iine!) aims to create a community where everyone can live in peace in the neighborhoods they’re familiar with, while supporting and helping each other. In order to promote this plan, we need the cooperation of all people who live and work in Naka Ward.
Let’s start with what we can do, such as greeting each other on the street or exercising for our health.

Themes for initiatives under the plan: “Looking out for each other” and “Bursting with good health and vitality”

Looking out for each other

Let’s take an interest in each other. Sometimes we all need to come together and think of solutions to the problems in our lives!

For example, how about starting with the following?

- Let’s greet and talk to people in our community on a daily basis and deepen our ties so that everyone can feel free to talk to each other!

- Participate in local disaster drills and get to know more people in the neighborhood so that you can help each other out in an emergency.

- Learn about the community in which you live and talk with people around you. Take part in events that interest you.

Spending time with commissioned child welfare volunteers

Parenting is full of unknowns, and many guardians have worries.
To help such guardians and children connect with the community, we hold Oyako no Hiroba (Parent and Child Plaza), a casual gathering where people can get together and spend time in the company of commissioned child welfare volunteers and local child care supporters.

Bursting with good health and vitality

Let’s all work together to improve our mental and physical health!

For example, how about starting with the following?

- Take part in radio gymnastics with others in your community!

- Are the people around you healthy? Encourage each other to start doing something to improve health and general wellness!

- Join in health classes on food, exercise, and more!

Community health promotion classes
Health activity promotion workers invite you to come and get in shape!

Many people are concerned about their health, but are often unsure about how to go about getting in shape, while others find it hard to stick to an exercise regimen on their own. For such people, health activity promotion workers conduct a variety of creative activities in each district to improve community health, such as Nordic walking, exercises at health promotion classes, small gatherings, and mini health checks with public health nurses, etc. So let’s work together to improve our health!

Anisakis and campylobacter were the most common causes of food poisoning in Yokohama in 2021. Take steps to avoid food poisoning by knowing the key points of prevention!

Anisakis: Take care when eating bluefish or squid sashimi!

Characteristics

White translucent parasite about 2 to 3 cm in length, found in mackerel, Pacific saury, bonito, sea bream, squid, etc.

Symptoms

Severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting several hours to a dozen hours after eating

Key points to avoiding food poisoning

Check for freshness
Select fresh fish and remove the internal organs as soon as possible.
Do not eat fish guts raw.
Check the fish in a well-lit place and remove any insect bodies.
Freeze fish at -20°C for at least 24 hours, or cook thoroughly to the center at 70°C or higher.

Vinegar and soy sauce do not kill anisakis!

Campylobacter: Make sure chicken is thoroughly cooked!

Characteristics

Bacteria found in the intestinal tracts of chickens and cattle. Even a small amount of bacteria can cause food poisoning. Vulnerable to heat.

Symptoms

Onset 2 to 7 days after eating. Diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, etc.

Key points to avoiding food poisoning

Ensure meat is thoroughly cooked
Make sure the meat is thoroughly cooked through to the center (center at 75°C for at least 1 minute).
When eating out, do not choose raw or undercooked meat.
Do not get any contamination from meat on other foodstuffs
Thoroughly wash and disinfect hands and utensils that come in contact with raw meat.
Use different knives and cutting boards whenever possible.
When storing in a refrigerator, seal the container tightly to avoid contaminating other foodstuffs.

Campylobacter can also be found on fresh meat!

Using takeout and delivery services

Since the time between cooking and eating is long when ordering a take-out or delivery, and the risk of food poisoning is particularly high during hot weather, please be aware of the following points.
After purchasing food, go home immediately and do not carry it around for a long period of time.
Eat the food immediately after bringing it home. If you do not eat it immediately, store it in the refrigerator or otherwise avoid leaving it at room temperature for long periods of time.
When reheating, heat the food thoroughly to the center.
 Wash hands thoroughly before eating.
